Civil Disputes

Let us guide you.

Civil disputes are conflicts between people and/or businesses. The argument is typically over money, a product or service owed to one party, or some other perceived wrong.  A civil dispute begins when one party claims to have been harmed by the actions of another party and there are a number of ways that such disputes may be resolved. The Law Offices of JL Hughes is standing by to help.

A "Cease and Desist" or "Demand" Letter can be an extremely effective way to demand that someone take some action that is owed to you or of getting someone to stop engaging in harmful activity. The letter will identify the specific problematic activity as well as the consequences of not complying with the demand. Because the threat is usually a lawsuit, a Demand Letter is more effective when written by an attorney. Let the Law Offices of JL Hughes draft a letter on your behalf.

After a Demand Letter goes out, a dispute can usually be resolved by communication between the parties. Prior to initiating a civil lawsuit, the parties can agree to resolve their disputes and reach a compromise amicably to avoid the high expense of litigation or the risk of losing at trial. The Law Offices of JL Hughes can provide alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services to assist you and the opposing party reach an amicable agreement.

Litigation

If the dispute cannot be resolved by alternative dispute resolutions, the Law Offices of J L Hughes may be able to  represent you in a civil lawsuit in court.  In a civil lawsuit, the person or business bringing the action ("Plaintiff") asks the court to intervene to provide relief.  To resolve the lawsuit, the court will determine the facts of the case and will apply the appropriate laws to those facts to decide what legal consequences and remedies ultimately flow from the parties' actions.
